Soccer is in full swing across the United States. There’s the continental matchups between various domestic clubs in the Club World Cup and The Gold Cup started over the weekend with both the USMNT and Mexico getting off to positive starts. If international is not your style there’s also plenty of club soccer going on including MLS, NWSL, USL, and beyond that there’s your local flavor of soccer going on including the Mountain Premier League and Colorado Premier League. It’s a big wide scope of footy and there’s a lot of it out there; but still just one of me. Last week, despite saying in the newsletter there’d be a release of content: there was no content. I’m in the middle of some life changes that hopefully will pave the way for me to eventually put way more time into Box State. For the time being, I have one more feature in the pipeline this week and after then it will be just this weekly newsletter and the usual podcasts. With that quick update out of the way, lets talk some Colorado footy.

Kick Out Apartheid
This past Sunday, I was invited to an event at City Park named “Kick Out Apartheid”; a pop up kickaround designed to raise funds for displaced families and children in Gaza. The event featured snacks, various organizers and a mini footy tournament with the winners claiming two new Celtic kits provided by the kit man himself Football Top Broker.
I was able to capture some scenes from the event and will be releasing a small feature in the coming days that recaps the event, it’s purpose and creation, and some words from a key organizer as well. Overall it was a great time out and amidst the commercialization of the modern era of soccer, this was a good step back away from the professional side and into a part of the game that seeks to unite and create good.

Gatorade Player of the Year
Xavier Sevian from Boulder High School was named Colorado’s Gatorade Player of the Year. The award is given to top high school athletes who excel on the field, in the classroom, and in their community. Former Gatorade Player of the Year for Colorado include Tajon Buchannan, Shane O’Neil, Conor Casey and Brian Mullan to name a few.
Sevian is a promising prospect. In the 2024-25 season, he scored 24 goals, recorded 26 assists, he was selected for the 5A First Team, and earned the MVP award in the All American High School game. Sevian is the 5th ranked player in the nation and is heading to Clemson to play college ball.
Box State Trivia: Xander Sevian will be attending Clemson University, the alma mater of current Colorado Rapids assistant head coach Wolde Harris.
Box State Footy Player of the Week:
Jaelin Howell made a strong case for the POTW award this week but this week it goes to Janine Beckie who scored and assisted in Racing Louisville’s 4-2 loss against the surging Kansas City Current. I did not have the time to make a fancy sports edit this week but still wanted to give props.
Should Jaelin Howell have won the award here? She scored in Gotham’s 3-0 win over the Utah Royals but Howell did get sent off very late in the match. Is a goal and assist more impactful in a 4-2 loss or is a lone goal in a 3-0 blowout where you get a late second yellow?
